Information for Senior Cycle students thinking about third level study in the UK:
When applying to UCAS: Steps to take are
- Are you interested in any of the following areas of study: Nursing, Psychology, Therapies e.g Physio / Occupational / Speech & Language, Podiatry, Dietetics, Radiography, Primary Teaching, Primary Teaching with Psychology, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary.
- If the answer is yes. Are you prepared to consider studying in the UK? ( You don’t have to be 100% sure)
- Are you prepared to put in some effort into researching the UCAS system?
- Discuss the financial aspects of studying in the UK. Scotland - no fees - Wales and N.Irl ÂŁ3,200 or so, England ÂŁ9,000 +. Â Â Nursing, Therapies, Radiography, Dietetics are free everywhere in the UK at this moment. - If you are still interested- go to www.ucas.tv and watch a few videos on the applications system
- Discuss UCAS with your parents ( They’ll be the ones funding the venture)
- If you are interested in anything medical you would be advised to find some kind of work shadowing / experience. The difficulties here are with insurance. It is tricky to overcome this but you will need to work with your school. The school will probably have to contact the insurance providers and work in some way to have the work experience recognised by the school as part of the careers programme. It’s a bit like the TY work experience insurance. You will need to get an understanding of this before the summer holidays.
- If you are interested in teaching (primary) why not volunteer to spend a few days helping out in June at a local primary school. If you have a job in a summer camp / sports camp that is really useful too. Because the closing date for applications for the majority of UCAS courses is next January you will still have time to do your work experience / shadowing next term - but remember you’ll be in Leaving Cert.
- Arrange to go to the Higher Options Careers Exhibition next September. http://www.irishtimes.com/higher-options The UK colleges that actively recruit Irish students will be there. ( Tickets available at the link - or contact the school Guidance Counsellor to see what the plans are.)
- There’s a bit of work to do for UCAS, and it takes time to figure things out but it’s better to apply and decide not to go than not to apply and wonder if you should have done so.
