INVITE TO IIG VISION EVENING – THURS SEPT. 21st

The Ignatian Identity Group (IIG) at the Jes is a group of parents, teachers, Jesuits and past pupils working together to assist the school in maintaining a Jesuit and Ignatian ethos. Part of our work is facilitating Vision Evenings for parents during the school year, usually one each term, to bring you interesting and relevant speakers who share the ethos of the school, and have a good story to tell.

The Ignatian Identity Group’s first meeting of this school year will be held this coming Thursday September 21st. We are delighted that our speaker for this meeting is Fr. Leonard Moloney, the ‘Provincial’ and head of the Jesuits in Ireland.

Leonard will be discussing issues relevant to the school, and giving his answers to questions such as why the Jesuits are still involved in the school and why we should have hope. This will be a thoughtful and engaging talk and is a unique opportunity to meet Fr Leonard and hear his insights on these issues.

The meeting will be held in the Griffin Hall (old building) and there will be a tea/coffee reception from 7pm, and the meeting will begin at 7.30.

We hope to see you there for our first meeting of this year.

MOUNTAINEERING CLUB TRIP TO LOUGH FEEAGH

The Jes Mountaineering Club trip to Lough Feeagh, Newport, Co. Mayo took place on 1st to 2nd September. The group of 17 students was lead by Mr. Molloy and Ms. Donoghue. The group stayed in the bothy in Letterkeen on Friday night and on Saturday walked around Lough Feeagh. A thoroughly enjoyable weekend was had by all.

MOUNTAINEERING CLUBS CAMPING TRIP TO ACHILL – MAY 12TH & 13TH

The Jes Mountaineering Club’s camping trip to Achill took place on the 12 and 13th May.

There were 14 pupils and 3 teachers on the trip. Mr. Molloy, Ms. O’Sullivan and Ms. Donoghue.

CASTLECONNELL REGATTA

Coláiste Iognáid Rowing Club had a very successful trip to Castleconnell County Limerick on Saturday 6th of May. The well attended regatta concentrated mainly on underage rowing with a record entry of 420 crews and the Jes brought its under fourteen and fifteen rowers only.

The Jes recorded eight wins and many good performances for their crews coached by Luke Sheridan, Alex Burke, Kai McGlacken and David Young. The best race of the day saw the Jes under 15 boys eight deadheat with St Michaels RC, Limerick in the under 15 eights final. It was only the second time that the boys had raced in the eight.

The wins were as follows:

JES BASKETBALL UPDATE

The Jes 1st Year Boys Basketball team competed in the A All-Irelands in UL last weekend.

The team performed admirably competing against Pobailscoil Sliabh Luachra Rathmore, Coláiste Éanna Dublin, De La Salle Waterford and Summerhill Sligo.

The team were a credit to the school and will undoubtedly be back for the years to come competing at the top level of Irish schools basketball.

Jes players from 1st Year to 6th Year competed in the Fr. Manning 3-on-3 Tournament in St. Mary’s College recently.
The Jes entered 6 teams into the competition and enjoyed the day thoroughly.

U17 GIRLS TO PLAY IN FIRST GIRLS FOOTBALL FINAL IN JES HISTORY

This year the girls gaelic has been a great success. Although we got off to a rocky start losing by only three points to Calasanctius we were determined to come back even stronger. We bounced back from this defeat to beat Athenry. Our hopes of continuing our season were riding on this match and although it was a tough contest we pulled through with a spectacular win.

We then advanced to the semi-finals against local rivals Taylors we knew it was going to be a competitive match from the beginning. Although we conceded a number of scores and were down at half time, with fantastic performances from scorers Aoife McGovern, Zara O’Toole and Aoife O’Farrell we came back to win the game 3-5 to 1-6 and secure our place in the first girls final in Jes history.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the contribution and commitment of Ms.Biggin’s (manager) , Marian and Sarah Donnellan (coaches), who gave their own time to hold training every Thursday.

The final will take place at 11am on Friday 11th May at The Prairie, Salthill.
