Hockey

Hockey is a very important part of extra-curricular life here in Coláiste Iognáid. The Jes Hockey Club has over 120 members ranging from First year to sixth Year. Our hockey teams offer girls the chance to play hockey for the very first time or to enhance skills built up at club level. Students are very welcome to join at any stage. Hockey in the Jes creates a positive environment and support network for our students. Our philosophy is that all girls should get the opportunity to train, play and have fun no matter what the ability.

We are a highly successful Club both on and off the pitch, winning many major trophies including the much-coveted Senior A All Ireland competition, The Kate Russell Cup in 2009, beating top competitive schools in Leinster Munster, South East and Ulster. We were also Runners up in All Ireland senior A in 2010. The Jes have also been Connacht Senior Palmer Cup and Costello League winners 11 times in the past twenty years.

Many players from the Jes Hockey Club have been selected to represented Connacht at U.16 and U.18 levels with many of those going on to represent Ireland. In 2021 nine players from the school were selected to represent their Provence.

Former Jes player, Irish Captain and current Jes coach, Brenda Flannery has written a book called “Roots Go Deep” about her great experiences playing hockey in the school. The book also contains over 100 submissions from other Jes hockey players and from other insightful sports stars from all Provinces. It is available for sale from the school Office and all proceeds go to the hockey club.

Jes hockey wouldn’t survive without the hard work and dedication from all the voluntary coaches, managers, bus drives and our school management over many decades. Sincere thank you to all those that have been involved and volunteered their time so generously over many years.

Research shows that participating in sport is of great benefit to students. Studies show that girls involved in team sports like Hockey, help to build self-confidence, self-esteem, wellbeing, as well as time management, responsibility, social and leadership skills. Recent research also shows evidence that students involved in sport frequently attain better exam results in state exams than those who do not participate.

So, if you want to make lots of friends, have fun, keep healthy, keep fit, and be part of a supportive community, come along and join. All are welcome!

See you there! We are Jes!
